Unfortunately, friends and family members, many of whom are part of a lost generation, are stuck in a narrative, and believe horrific results "don't affect me".
They can't add one plus one if you don't mind my veering from the point of your post. They think they're the good Jews. It's the lack of empathy and connection that's most hurtful.
